Wassup people? So I just chipped the ECU in my 93 Integra and now my tempature gauge is jumping. Not all the time, just every couple of minutes. Anybody else have this happen? Anybody know why this is happening? I want to make sure that I don't damage my engine from overheating. PLEASE SHED SOME LIGHT IF YOU KNOW WHATS GOING ON. Thanks

sounds like you have air in the system. have you recently done anything with the coolant? you may want to bleed your coolant to get rid of the air.

If air is the problem theres a valve where the top radiator hose connects to the motor to release the air. Start the motor and unscrew it and let it spit out untill its a straight stream then tighten it back up.

check compession (possible bhg, worst case scenerio)
check under your oil cap for any milky substance (tell tail sign of bhg, once again)
check your spark plugs (they tell you a lot about whats going on in the combustion chamber)
check your thermostat (that it opens at the correct temp, possibly sticks)
check your coolant temp sensor (make sure it is functioning properly, could just be the sensor on its way out)

if there was air in the coolant the rpms would jump too because the cts (coolant temp sensor) wouldnt be reading right so it would rev up to keep it warm. anyway.

a jumping gauge. i would go with thermostat. because if it sticks closed when the car cools off and then opens it will make the needle go all over. it is pretty easy to do its right where the upper radiator hose goes into the engine. in that coolant neck

Yeah, it seems like the thermostat is stuck closed. Unfortunately my thermostat is connected to the lower radiator hose and its a b**ch to get to. I got the new thermostat so hopefully that does the trick. Ijust replaced the motor about 150 miles ago, so i"m sure the head gaskets good. I'll check the oil again tomorrow for the hell of it. Thanks again everybody!!! I'll keep you posted

So I changed my thermostat and the one in my car was not an oem honda part and it was stuck closed. Although my temp gauge is not jumping as often, if still occasionally moves a little past half way (about half way between warm and hot) but soon returns back to normal. I never paid much attention to my gauge before now, is this normal, or is this a warning sign? What should I look at next? New Radiator? Coolant Temp. Sensor? My oil is good, no blown headgasket, fans work, coolant is full, and i'm not quite sure what I should be looking for in my spark plugs. PLEASE SHED SOME LIGHT MY WAY! Thanks in advance everyone!

I'm hoping thats its just the gauge. My car seems to be running good. My rpms jump to around 3k as soon as I start my car but immediately go back down to 1k, I think its because I'm still trying to fine tune my idle to accomodate for the advance in my cam gears.

What internal parts do you have? Why the advance?

Other than the cam gears my internals are all stock. I advnaced them because it squeezes out a little more power, better acceleration too.

Oh man... My car started to do this exact same thing today... It get really hot then goes to normal temp in a matter of seconds. It cant be overheating cause it gets to normal so fast after its maxed out to the red. Who knows what this can be.. Im gunna tinker with it today and let you guys know what happens.

I just went and got some Bar's Leaks head gasket repair and ran it through the cooling system. Its drying now but i will let you know if it works. I'm pretty sure thats what was cause the temp gauge to jump plus i have some coolant going through the exhaust.
