Nissan is busy reworking its signature sports car for 2009, and our latest set of illustrations gives you an early look at the changes. Clearly this will be an evolutionary design that softens some of the harder edges of the current model.

According to our source, one of the bigger changes will be a wider track, that will necessitate extended wheel flares front and rear. Up front, the 2009 350Z will also get a slimmer look, with a less upright airdam and smaller headlight clusters. The windshield might get relaxed a degree or two, but the 350Z's instantly identifiable silhouette will remain as will the hatchback rear end.

Mechanically, the 2009 350Z isn't expected to change much. The overall suspension design will stay, although its tuning may get softened a notch or two to make it more livable. With one of the best V6s in the world already under the hood you can bet that aspect of the 350Z won't change, but look for Nissan to bump horsepower to around 325.

Much of the criticism of the current model revolves around the cabin. Nissan already made one round of upgrades which helped in the materials department, but look for the next-generation model to go even further. Convenience features like more storage and softer armrests may be added despite the Z's reputation as a serious sports car.

With Nissan already gearing up to introduce the new Skyline at next fall's Tokyo auto show, the 2009 Nissan 350Z may not make an appearance until early 2008 with sales beginning later that year.

Designed as a replacement to the 350Z, the 370Z’s styling is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Overall, the 370Z — which was developed under the code name C53D — keeps the same general shape as the current 350Z. As previously speculated, the newest Z receives a headlight treatment similar to the design seen on the 2009 Maxima. The headlamps will use LEDs.

The rear is also a bit stubbier, with a sharper crease along the trailing edge of the hatch. The 370Z’s rear taillights also have a fishhook design similar to those seen on the Maxima’s headlights.

The 370Z uses the same VQ37VHR powerplant found in the Infiniti G37 — a V6 displacing 3.7-liter — delivering 332 horsepower and 26 mpg on the highway. Those 332 horses will be sent to the 370Z’s rear wheels via either a seven-speed automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox. Of note, the six-speed 370Z will be the first vehicle to offer a synchronized downshift rev matching system with a manual transmission.

As expected, the 370Z will offer a serious performance upgrade over the current 350Z. The 370Z will ride on a shorter wheelbase than the current car, and will also use more lightweight materials. Those changes net a lighter curb weight, meaning all around performance – acceleration, braking and cornering – will see a marked improvement.

Suspension duties for the new car will be handled by a double wishbone setup up front with a multi-link setup out back. Brembo brakes and 18 and 19 inch wheels will also be part of the 370Z package.

The 370Z should offer buyers a little more cargo room — although the coupe is not cavernous by any stretch of the imagination — thanks to the relocation of the car’s trunk-mounted support member.

The 2009 370Z will come in two trim levels — base and Touring — with the entry-level car listing from $29,930. Look for the new Z to hit dealers in the first part of 2009

Z may be the last letter of the alphabet, but in the world of sports cars, the Z has been near the forefront for nearly four decades for Nissan and as a Datsun when it first debuted here in 1969.

Now for 2009, Nissan has completed its first full redesign of the iconic Z car since it was reintroduced as a 2003 model. It had been discontinued in 1999 after a 30-year run.

Billed by Nissan as an "everyday sports car", the 2009 370Z Coupe has a shorter wheelbase, more power and features either a new seven-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual.

In fact, nearly every piece and component is changed from the outgoing 350Z (the number corresponds to the engine size) in the new model with an aerodynamic body that is more compact and has a more aggressive stance.

While it has a refreshing new look, the traditional Z design is still evident with the long hood and short rear deck, which opens in liftback form to reveal a smallish cargo area. Twin chrome exhausts in the rear add to the aggressive look.

A rear-wheel drive two-seater, the 370Z is available in coupe form only for 2009.

However, a convertible version will hit the streets as a 2010 model in the near future.

Like its cousin the G37 sedan/coupe/convertible, the 370Z features the fourth generation VQ series 3.7-litre, 24-valve DOHC V6 engine, rated at 332 hp and 270 lb/ft of torque. The 370Z also shares the same platform as the G series cars, but there the similarity ends.

The 370Z is pure sports car rather than sports coupe/sedan. The interior is an upgrade from the 350Z with the cozy cabin featuring higher quality materials and better ergonomics. It has a cockpit-like look and feel with three huge round gauges front and centre for the driver. Three other round gauges sit atop the centre stack, which features an easy-to-read seven-inch colour LCD monitor.
